Indeed, the parameters and priorities of fashion design and production are changing as the fashion industry responds to consumer sentiment around the climate crisis. More than three in five consumers said environmental impact is an important factor in making purchasing decisions, leading executives to employ various strategies to avoid overstock in the future, from reducing the number of collections they produce a year to reducing product development lead times, according to BoF and McKinsey & Co.’s State of Fashion Report 2021. Still, garment production volumes are predicted to grow by 2.7 percent annually between now and 2030.
Tools such as virtual sampling, digital material libraries and 3D rendering of collections for sales are also skills that are now desirable within design and production fields, to assist in design processes that produce less waste, but also in reaction to the pandemic’s acceleration of a shift to digital in design and product development. Designers have had to reconsider how they are presenting their collections to reach wider audiences and meet consumer expectation, to account for environmental and digital considerations.
What’s more, departmental, cross-functional — even industry-wide — collaboration is increasingly leveraged by brands, in part driven by an evolving workplace culture. Teams behind a collection are receiving a greater share in the credit for the creative process, with Gucci and Burberry leading the way by featuring their production teams in their latest lookbooks.
“It’ll be less about one person who sits on this pedestal and controls everything, and more about the people who make it happen,” designer Peter Do previously told BoF.
